Call for admission to the Graduate Program
“Bioinformatics”
The Faculty of Medicine in collaboration with the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH) offers a Graduate Program in “Bioinformatics”. With regard to the Academic Year 2018-2019, courses will start in the Fall 2018. The program leads to the award of a Master's of Science degree (M.Sc.) in "Bioinformatics" after the successful completion of four (4) academic semesters. The MSc in Bioinformatics aims at a highly competitive, interdisciplinary and international audience. Lectures and practical classes will be taught in English by professors of the University of Crete Faculties of Medicine, Biology, Computer Science and Mathematics as well as by experienced researchers from FORTH (Crete). The programme is full-time and attendance is mandatory.
The Program is admitting every academic year a maximum number of 20 students. Eligible applicants should hold an MD or BSc degree of various disciplines including: a) Biomedical Sciences (Biology, Biochemistry, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacology etc), b) Natural Sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Material Science),c) Mathematics and Computer Science, d) Engineers.
The selection of applicants is based on the following criteria:
1) The overall grade of the University Degree,
2) The grades in undergraduate courses relevant to the Programme's scope,
3) The relevance of undergraduate thesis project(s) (if applicable),
4) Relevant research activity of the candidate,
5) The assessment of the letters of recommendation,
6) Documentation of sufficient knowledge of English,
7) Prizes and scholarships awarded to the applicant by the time of application,
8) Interview performance
The interviews will take place in the Medical School of the University of Crete on September 3rd, 2018. The exact hour and place will be announced at a later date.

I.I.P.P.S. in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Biotechnology
The Inter-institutional Interdepartmental Program of Postgraduate Studies (I.I.P.P.S.) is organized by the Department of Medicine and the Department of Biological Applications and Technology of the School of Health Sciences of the University of Ioannina, the Department of Chemistry of the School of Sciences of the University of Ioannina, in conjunction with the Biomedical Research Institute (BRI) of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH). Administrative support is provided by the Department of Medicine of the University of Ioannina.
The Program is a continuation from the Interdepartmental P.P.S. in Biotechnology which has been active since academic year 1998-99. The I.P.P.S. in Biotechnology was founded initially in 1998, modified in 2003, 2005 and 2014, and re-founded in May 2018 as Inter-institutional Interdepartmental (I.I.) P.P.S. in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Biotechnology.
The Program awards a Master’s Degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Biotechnology. The duration of the Program is 3 academic semesters (90 ECTS).
The Program aims at preparing well-educated scientists for careers in biological/biomedical and biotechnological research, education, public services or the private sector. In parallel, it aims at promoting knowledge and research development and contributes to the fulfillment of the educational, research, social, cultural and developmental needs of the country.
Successful completion of the postgraduate course requires an one-year Diploma Research Project to be carried out in one of the participating laboratories at the Department of Medicine, the Department of Biological Applications and Technology, or the Department of Chemistry of the University of Ioannina, or the Biomedical Research Institute of the Foundation for Research and Technology (BRI-FORTH) which is located on the University campus of Ioannina, and/or with collaborating research teams.
Call for expression of interest to participate in the program is published in June, selection of successful candidates is completed in September, and the postgraduate course starts in early October, each academic year. In special cases, the Program Steering Committee may opt to postpone the Call for expression of interest until November and, accordingly, the selection process until January and the start of the courses until early February (spring semester). Details of the study program and regulations are available in the Official Government Gazette 1254/τ. Β΄/06-03-2023.
